STUDENT LIFE

Originating centuries ago in English universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, the residential college model fosters robust student life by creating a small, diverse community of students, faculty, and alumni. Within a large research university like UC Berkeley, the residential college personalizes the academic experience for its undergraduate residents. In-residence faculty bridge student housing and campus life, nurturing social stability and helping students develop independent living.

Founded in 1929, Bowles Hall is the only residential college at UC Berkeley. After extensive renovations in 2016, it now offers the premier co-ed four-year housing experience for Berkeley students.
